Visit website ↗Rethinking a mission-driven digital experience
I created this website redesign as part of a proposal to explore how BTU's digital presence could communicate its mission, programs, initiatives, and community impact through a more modern and structured experience.
The Experience to Improve
The redesign focused on three questions:
What does BTU do?
How can visitors discover its work?
What can visitors do next?
The Opportunity
Organizations with broad missions often have a lot of valuable information to communicate.
The opportunity was to make BTU's work easier to navigate while giving the organization a stronger visual presence.
The Design Approach
I approached the redesign by thinking about the experience from the perspective of different types of visitors.
Clear Information Hierarchy
Help visitors quickly understand the organization and its mission.
Simplified Navigation
Make important programs and information easier to discover.
Stronger Visual Storytelling
Give people, programs, stories, and photography more room to lead.
Clear Calls to Action
Create stronger paths toward participating, supporting, or learning more.
The Proposed Experience
The proposed homepage creates a progression from Mission → Programs → Impact → Community → Action.
The goal was to make the website feel less like a collection of pages and more like a digital platform for BTU's community and work.
Visual Direction
The visual direction was designed to feel bold, editorial, modern, and culturally expressive while maintaining the professionalism expected from an established organization.
From Design to Prototype
The proposal was more than a collection of static screens. I created an interactive Figma prototype and frontend implementation to demonstrate how the proposed experience could work in practice.

The Outcome
Although the project did not move forward, it provided an opportunity to explore how a mission-driven organization could use its website to communicate its work more clearly and create a stronger digital experience for its community.
My Role
I handled the project from concept through design and prototype development.
UX Strategy
Explored audience needs, content structure, and experience goals.
Information Architecture
Structured how programs, initiatives, and content could be discovered.
UI Design
Developed the visual direction and interface system.
Prototyping
Created interactive and frontend prototypes.
Project Reflection
This project reinforced an important part of my design process: a website redesign should not begin with visual changes.
The visual design is the result of understanding the content, audience, goals, and problems the experience needs to solve.
Understand the organization and its audience first, identify the experience that needs improvement, and then use design and technology to propose a practical solution.
Proposal — Not Commissioned. This project was independently created as a redesign concept and was not commissioned by Black Theatre United.
